Picture 1
For almost a decade, Elias Irizarry has used black and white photography to create a strong record of Latino life in NYC. He is a Puerto Rican, born and raised in the South Bronx. Elias began taking photographs at the age of 12 and has studied photography and photojournalism at The New School and The NY Institute of Photography in New York City. He specializes in black and white documentary photography and has focused much of his work on the everyday lives of Latinos in NYC. Elias’ commitment to community empowerment, ethnic pride, and civil rights led him to see his work as more than just a passion: he had a responsibility to document the culture, history and lifestyle of his people. His book titled " Raices Boricuas" will be out in the summer of 2010. Elias’ work is featured on the cover of "Rhythms of the Afro-Atlantic World" due out May, 2010.
