Musicians in B&W

cihuatl tonali blog
Several years ago I photographed a few local Los Angeles music and poety groups. One of my Flickr sets has Quetzal, Ozomatli, Cihuatl Tonali, Jarabe Citlali, Quinto Sol and In Lak Ech. Most of it was shot on BW film. I will keep adding to that set until I have an edit for a gallery on Calaverascallejeras.com.

Gil Ortiz

In either 1975 or 1976 photographer Gil Ortiz shot Cesar Chavez on a march through Malibu, CA.

Born in Los Angeles Gil grew up in the downtown LA area. At an early age he landed a job in a photo lab and soon began to document life around him. For years he was a shooter in New York. He is currently back to shooting in Los Angeles.

Ortiz Transfer - 1952

Photographer Gil Ortiz was kind enough to let me use this photo taken by his father Willie Ortiz.

Photo was taken on Alpine Street between Figueroa and Bunker Hill, about 1952.

I have had the pleasure of working with the most talented group of photojournalists in the US for over 25 years.

Now it is time for me to move forward.

4th of July in East LA

"Una bomba", my 78 year old mom told my daughter as the fieworks started before sunset.

A few hours later we all went outside to watch the neighborhood fireworks but not necessarily to celebrate "independance day."

This photo of artist Jose Antonio's monumental mosaic mural "OUR LEGACY: Forever Presente..." is one of my favorita photos taken by former Los Angeles Times photographer Carlos Chavez. The mural is inside the foyer of the East Los Angeles Library.
